Answer: because the modem is recognised as a second sound card.
The number #0 is the one of the "real" sound-card, while the #1 is the one
of the "modem" sound card. In fact, as I wrote, you will manage to work
with this modem-sound-card running the slmodemd daemon and loading the
appropriate sound module.

My aplay -l before starting slmodemd is:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: nForce3 [NVidia nForce3], device 0: Intel ICH [NVidia nForce3]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: nForce3 [NVidia nForce3], device 2: Intel ICH - IEC958 [NVidia nForce3
- IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

When slmodemd is running I have:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: nForce3 [NVidia nForce3], device 0: Intel ICH [NVidia nForce3]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: nForce3 [NVidia nForce3], device 2: Intel ICH - IEC958 [NVidia nForce3
- IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Modem [NVidia nForce3 Modem], device 0: Intel ICH - Modem [NVidia
nForce3 Modem - Modem]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I hope that if it had not been clear before, it isn't less clear now.
Hi, Michail.
