Thanks for the pointer. Gave it a try (I also have a 1920x1200 display), but it didn't make a difference. Fonts still oversized on X start. It's not a big issue - just means an extra minute or so of "tweaking" whenever I restart X (which is usually only once in the mornings when I get to work).
