I think it is slightly louder than the stock drive but it's negligible for the 60GB 7200RPM drive. It has never caused heat build up that triggers the fans to run...the CPU seems to be the only offender, in terms of massive heat buildup. If there are long term effects I haven't seen them yet. I also don't think the 7200RPM drives are a stability issue...manufacturers like Toshiba and IBM offer them as options in their laptops.
