Not exactly. ifup runs all the startup scripts for bringing up the interface. The "ifconfig eth1 up" command only tells the system the interface should be made active.
huh?  are you saying it only works with encrypted APs?  What about when
you go to a public hotspot?

No, it means you would need to tell it the ESSID of the network you want to connect to before the interface would come up. Since my laptops are only used at home 99.9% of the time I hard code the key in the startup scripts.

The way to work around this issue seems to either put the ESSID in the ifcfg-eth1 configuration file or just run NetworkManager which seems to work just fine with this driver.

If you typically use hotspots and move around frequently you'll definitely want to use NetworkManager.
