Hi Alexander,

I was juuust about to send you guys an email about the Trace Compass project :D I guess I will explain it here instead.

As I've talked with Jeff and Roland at EclipseCon last March, we of the LTTng component have been toying with the idea of splitting off into our own project for a while. As explained in the proposal, the scope of "TMF" is now much larger than just "the LTTng component of the Linux Tools project", especially when you consider we are not specific to neither LTTng nor Linux anymore. There are also many committers and contributors interested in it, to the point where TMF is getting its own community separate from the rest of Linux Tools. So moving off to a stand-alone project was slowly making more and more sense.

As I've told Jeff and Roland too, it's NOT that we don't like you guys :) It's really more a logistics decision at this point.

So we've been working on the paperwork for getting a new project up over the past few weeks. But turns out things moved faster than we expected, and the proposal was made public before we could send our announcements. Oh well, so here it is now, TMF is becoming Trace Compass!

We haven't made any specific plans yet, but I think we'll at least maintain the LTTng component in Linux Tools for the Mars cycle. But eventually all new development will happen in Trace Compass. We don't know any cut-off date yet, it all depends on when we get our repos, etc.

Again, sorry if this seemed like a surprise. We really appreciate all the work you've done "for" us these past years, with project management and releng for instance. Now we'll have to learn to do that ourselves ;)

If anybody has any question, or comments on the new project or the proposal [1], please let us know! We will announce our plans, new website, git repos, etc. as we get them.

Cheers,
Alexandre

Hi everyone,
I was just made aware of http://projects.eclipse.org/proposals/trace-compass.
Is it a proposal to move the content of lttng suproject altogether to separate
project or just parts of it?
