In addition to what Todd said, making sure you have a forensic backup/ copy before mucking around with it may be necessary/prudent as well. I might even go so far as only deal with that backup copy.

Better yet, since you do not sound like you are employed as an agent of this company AND your doing your friend a favor. Step back and tell him the best favor you can do him is point him to a bonded etc company who can do this for him.

This whole deal screams legal can of worms.
