So the encryption will cause slightly more overhead on both the traffic and the cpu usage, but I can't say I was ever upset about speed when using it. If you really want speed and a mountable file system you should be using NFS with tweaked settings to maximize throughput in addition to bonded NICs. However there are two things to remember when it comes to something like this. One, your CPU usage averages out to be pretty low because even when you are using your machine it isn't doing a lot. There are of course exceptions to that, but for the majority of people it is true. The other is that speed is also something that also isn't always that big a deal. If you keep copying multi-gig files around from machine to machine then you really need to think about NFS+bonded nics, or if it is often enough move to 10gb. Most of the time waiting a few more seconds really isn't going to hurt, but it really depends on what you are moving around.
