One thing that comes up is that laptops usually have a switch, or a
keyboard function to disable wireless. He may have disabled wireless
that way.

You can check to see what access points show up with iwlist from
command line while he is near the access point to see if it showing
up.

Also, make sure to distinguish between "getting connected" and
"getting authorized/logging in." First is to get connected with
security and get an IP. Then many hotspots required you to log in to
before accessing the internet.

Remote tech support is never easy. Your friend should probably try to
find a geek closer to where he is stationed.
