Dino showed me this F/OSS VM solution tonight, I'm thinking of building a
box to host some VMs.

checked this list for a couple of weeks)

About oVirt

oVirt is a virtualization management framework constisting of a small host
image, the oVirt Node, that provides the libvirt service to host virtual
machines, and a robust vm management software stack, controlled by a
web-based management interface, the oVirt Server. This stack provides pxe
and other automated vm boot / appliance solutions; various vm operations,
task, vnc, and other access; and a secure authentication based on freeIPA.

oVirt also provides a standardized qmf/qpid interface which to control and
manage vms. Very preliminary work is also underway at implementing a cloud
infrastructure / api.

Current the oVirt Node runs KVM. Patches are welcome to support other
hypervisors and work will be underway to support Xen based Nodes in the near
future.

oVirt is:

    * A small host image that provides libvirt and hosts virtual machines
    * A robust virtual machine management software stack
    * A Web-based virtual machine management console
    * A standard API which to control and access virtual machines
    * An expiremental cloud infrastructure

oVirt goals:

    * Empower virtual machine owners without giving up control of hardware
    * Automate virtual machine clustering, load balancing, and SLA
maintenance
    * Simplify management of large numbers of machines
    * Work across platforms and architectures

oVirt uses:

    * A kerberos/LDAP server for authentication and authorization (oVirt
ships with FreeIPA)
    * DNS/DHCP services on the local LAN -- or provides them for oVirt hosts
over a private network if desired
    * libvirt for virtual machine management, storage management, and secure
remote communication
    * collectd for stats gathering and monitoring
    * Rails for rapid, flexible development
    * cobbler for provisioning
