Basically, she saved them to a disk (on her computer in Honduras), brought them to Thailand with her, and things were fine until someone installed some weird Thai (non-legit?) version of Word on some computer where her files were. After that happened, the looked really weird, so I don't know if it's a virus or some weird encoding issues (hopefully the latter). I tried opening it with Abiword and OpenOffice, but it still comes up with jibberish. I've tried various character sets, and it always looks like garbage. Any ideas? I'm pushing for the original hard drive so I can try to get it off there (it's lots of her academic papers, including stuff for her PhD).
