depends on your budget...
dreamhost and media temple have their shared hosting technologies which
means you are sharing resources with everyone and their grandma...

VPS you sort of get a dedicated machine but it's virtual so you still may be
sharing resources

full dedicated servers aren't cheap

I've got customers running both dedicated and virtual machines...
