PDFedit looks promising, but by default when I select text and edit it, and 
then press the ENTER key, it replaces the text with a bunch of "0" characters.

More studying testing is in order.  I'll look at those links you sent.  What 
I'd like to find is something I read years ago about how to create 
placeholders in pdf files and then replace them later with a text editor; if I 
could figure that out I could create an automatic billing system that would 
send PDFs.
