Well, I've just tried it, and it doesn't work either.  Going into
Control Panel -> Ports, I saw an empty list where one normally sees COM1
and COM2.  I've tried adding COM1, it added, asked me to reboot - did
so.  After the reboot I do see the port that I've added, but the rest of
WinNT system still apparently doesn't see it: the procedure for adding a
modem doesn't seem to see it, and neither does HyperTerminal.  It must
be some kind of Weendoze issue and my Weendoze skills are nowhere near
sufficient to resolve it.

Normally my next step in a situation like this would be to take the
system to a Weendoze expert (such as my dad), but I have a feeling that
given the totally unknown state of this OS install, the expert would
probably want to reinstall the OS as first order business - which brings
us back to the non-working CD-ROM.  Oh, and it is some funky external
CD-ROM drive, and it was probably never meant to be bootable even back
when it did once work...

That's why I'm leaning toward finding another laptop...
