Streaming video can work with Linux. Whether a specific stream will work, depends on the specifics of the server and possibly your Linux installation. If the server uses only open and standard formats and protocols, it will likely work out of the box with most distros. If it streams proprietary codecs, then it depends on which codecs you have installed.
