Apologies to all those without the level of knowledge implied by a CS
degree, but the best case of course is a CS level of knowledge and
experience with a customer focus. They are not mutually exclusive.

Best of both worlds. I want an engineer to know what an O(n^2)
algorithm is and why it is a problem. I shouldn't have to explain a
hash table or a linked list to a software engineer. I shouldn't have
to explain what blocking means or critical section or double buffering
or deadlock or race condition.

That's not to say that everyone with a CS degree will demonstrate the
expected level of knowledge, or that someone without a degree could
not get up to that level in some other way.

But it isn't fair to ignore the value of a serious, knowledgeable
engineer, simply because there are prima donnas and wheel polishers
around.
