I will also be heading to SCaLE this year, though I take the college student approach: Get up every morning and commute into the city!
I'd be happy to drive anyone crazy enough to adopt such a policy, starting Friday morning and continuing throughout. Any such carpool would invariably include some redistribution of gas/parking money, but it's far cheaper (even if I go alone) than getting a hotel room. I'll be leaving Redlands each morning around 0700, leaving plenty of time to get to the hotel before everything starts. Of course, waking up early is no fun, but we all make sacrifices to avoid having to pay for a hotel.... After leaving Redlands, I'll be driving along 10, 605, and finally 105, so if you live between me and SCaLE, I can drop by!
