I'll second those suggestions, and add mercurial to the mix.  The
distributed ones are much better to work with, IMHO.

There are probably a hundred common ways to serve subversion over a network
(you can use http(s), svn protocol, ssh, a directory mounted over nfs, and
on and on.

Without any details, it would be tough to give a recommendation.
