With linux, it's about chipsets. You need a newer graphics driver. Nvidia is nv or similar, ATI is at. Intel is usually named according to specific number; ie, 915resolution.
sudo lshw will give a breakdown of ID'd chips, and a little searching will yield answers. Printers are a little complicated as far as drivers.
