Graphical interfaces show the hierarchical tree structure and it is just a
matter of clicking on the right place in that structure. You can use
Nautilus (GNOME) or Dolphin (KDE) to accomplish what you want.

In Dolphin you can change the View in the Menu to have the Folders visible
on the left side and have an editable location visible in the Navigation
bar. This way you can view and type. You can even add a terminal window.
Nautilus can be configured in a similar manner except to get the typable
locations you need to click on a tiny icon on the left side below the
navigation bar and it will toggle between the two modes. To get a terminal
window to open from Nautilus you need to add that feature from Synaptic.
