An alternative suggestion, if your hardware will allow it, run Linux in a virtual machine. I recommend installing Virtual Box under Windows and then installing several Linux distros in different VMs. That will give you three things: 1) a real Linux environment in which you can work 2) network access 3) a protected environment which won't break your windows.
