I understand that.  I've used Ubuntu before, but it should prompt you
for your user password just like any of the programs in System ->
Administration does.  Try one of the other programs like System ->
Administration -> Login Window.  If that doesn't prompt you for a
password, then the issue isn't with wireshark.  I would guess the
problem is with your sudo configuration.  Can you get a root prompt
from typing 'sudo su' in Gnome Terminal?  If it errors out, post the
error.
