Exactly. Even if he uses it to access only a web frontend, or FTP himself to
the machine, all of these protocols can be tunneled through SSH, ensuring
that he's going through a secured and encrypted connection to the
Linkstation.

Sometimes it's too cumbersome to setup a VPN environ. But it takes just a
couple of minutes to setup an SSH tunnel :).
