Awk is designed to work with text files where the data is structured,
laid out in records and fields. It excels at extracting info from these
kinds of files, and every version of Linux/UNIX will have awk installed.
Perl came along later, and now we have Python which is even more
powerful yet.

Actually, I have studied awk a long time ago. I never actually needed
to use it for anything.
