Hi folks!
I am running CentOS 5.5 (Gnome 2.16.1) on a box which I use for
development and I have stumbled on a very annoying problem with
keyboard layouts and, as an aside, with the Keyboard Indicator.
More specifically, I use a dual keyboard layout (US/Greek). The US
layout has a wrong mapping for the ' / " (apostrophe / double quote)
key. To correct things, I edited the corresponding keyboard layout
file, i.e. /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us, where there is the following
entry:
key <AC11> { [dead_acute, dead_diaeresis, apostrophe,
quotedbl ] };
In theory, all that would be needed would be a simple change of the
above, such as
key <AC11> { [apostrophe, quotedbl, dead_acute,
dead_diaeresis ] };
and a restart of X-Windows. However, after doing so (and in several
different variations), nothing changed.
As if that was not enough, the notorious Keyboard Indicator applet of
Gnome is now misbehaving. Sometimes it displays the wrong keyboard
layout, in others it does not display the second layout I use (Greek)
(which works fine), and in other times it merges (!) the descriptions
of the two layouts e.g., when I hover the mouse over it it displays
"US English Extended" and "Greek", instead of "US English" and "Greek
Extended" (which is the correct text).
So, does anyone know how I could:
(a) Convince Gnome to modify the US keyboard layout as I want?
(b) Correct (or re-install) the Keyboard Indicator applet?
Thanks!
Dimitris
