Hi, I have tried both XFCE & Gnome via a TightVNC server and the fonts are horrible, this occurs on both Debian and Archlinux for me.
I have ttf-dejavu and ttf-bitstream-vera installed and using X physically on the server looks fine. It's most noticeable when browsing the web with Firefox or using the terminal, in VNC it looks horrible but natively all is fine sad I'm creating my server like this: vncserver :1 -geometry 1280x800 Then I turn off all compression on my Windows client box and run it full screen at the native 1280x800 client resolution. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix it? Google suggests I can't use TTF with VNC? There must be a solution though? Even tried NoMachine's FreeNX which looks just as bad. I've checked the fontPath variable in /usr/bin/vncserver and tried putting 100dpi fonts before 75dpi but that didn't help, and it complains if I add the TTF directory.
