I've had the same problem with ubuntu, dreamlinux, sabayon (I think),
etc.

Even knoppix, which is the best of them, mounts initially as read-
only.

The difference is that knoppix makes it easy to change the read/write
permissions for the removable drive. You can right-click on the
desktop drive icon and there is a menu option that lets you switch
back and forth from read-only to writable.  This option is not present
in the others.

(BTW, I'm referring to knoppix 5.1-5.3.  I'm not sure if more recent
versions have the same behavior.)
