For those just tuning in that don't know Jer's mistake, he was trying to
execute a makefile, which doesn't work. The appropriate way to use a
makefile is to store it as Makefile for the filename and run 'make', which
should exist in your path.

Jer, for future reference, these forum posts are kept around as a reference
for all. If you find a solution to your own problem, please take the time
and come back to tell everyone the solution.
