I just installed Mint 12 on my laptop and after a short time of using their version of Gnome 3 when umplayer worked fine, I decided to switch to xfce4. Now whenever I attempt to start umplayer or smplayer, both programs pop up for a fraction of a second and disappear - even before ~/.mplayer is created. Running the programs from the command-line gives me a seg fault with no other info. Here are the relevant lines in /var/log/syslog:
Jan 4 12:31:59 bletchley kernel: [ 79.939046] umplayer[2750]: segfault at 8 ip 003c61d2 sp bffb73d0 error 4 in libQtCore.so.4.7.4[24c000+297000] Jan 4 12:32:11 bletchley kernel: [ 92.378857] smplayer[2764]: segfault at 10 ip 0127340c sp bfb93670 error 4 in libQtGui.so.4.7.4[b90000+a98000] VLC and Totem seem to work fine. I tend to use umplayer a lot. I wish I was able to provide you with more info. I would be happy to answer any other questions or provide other info upon request.
