Actually, what you are looking for is
Linux Live Kit
http://www.linux-live.org

I'm the developer of it and I can assure you it's pretty current :)

You can use it to turn your installed distro into a Live CD / USB

I'm building Slax thanks to Linux Live Kit too.

Just be sure to get the latest version 1.3 or -current version.
