ghostview is usually pretty good at decoding questionable pdfs. Should be 
in the repos for any distro.
Firefox has a built in js pdf reader, which you can turn on. I use it 
instead of Acrobat plugin, works pretty well.

Are you certain you didn't just get a munged copy? The google drive reader 
seems pretty durable.

Other than that, I kind of like qpdfview over most of the others, although 
it doesn't always read the trouble ones.

PDF Editor can be a good option, too. Not the best for reading files, but 
seems to be good at dissecting them.
