Hey Scott, well I'm not an expert in awesome wm, but this is how I made themes
working on Debian Jessie (awesome v3.4.15), probably there is a better a way to
do it. At first I was having issues with some themes because they were from an
older version of awesome, maybe you want to check that up if you haven't yet.
Then I have all my themes in ~/.config/awesome/themes in there I edited my
rc.lua to have something like
'beautiful.init("/home/whoever/.config/themes/current/theme.lua")' if there is
another line with beautiful.init you can comment that with -- (dash dash). With
that change made just go to ~/.config/awesome/themes and create a symlink
called current to the directory of the theme you want to use and reload
awesome. I have noticed that sometimes you will have to modify paths in the
theme.lua scripts from the theme and/or have to install dependencies... But so
far I liked awesome I use it in my work computer and it is great... Good luck!!!
