There really aren't any errors as such. Just  data streaming continuously 
from /dev/ttyUSB0 while programs that rely on gpsd can't see any of  it. 
So, I'm going to skip gpsd  for now and see if I  can get java script to 
read the data directly when I get to the gps module of my project. Thanks 
for the tip on adding a user to the  group. I'm sure that will come in 
handy.
