My question is are you sure it's that it's an issue with the OS version and
VLC? Do you know anyone else running a different flavor of Linux that can
try to run your large mp4's?

Personally, I would find another player to accommodate mp4's, or use
something like Handbrake to transcode to another format that works. No
sense re-building the house from scratch to get the new refrigerator
through the door.
