In the Linux shell, anything preceded by a dollar sign $ references a
variable. In this case, $UID automatically pulls your current logged-in
user account ID number. This UID variable is set in your shell environment.

For the gid=$(id -g) portion, it is running the command id -g in a quick
separate shell (not visibile to you), which returns your group ID. This
method of running a separate command to return output for the first command
run is common. it will pull the information for you automatically.

This command is safe to use as is, and does not require any modifications:

sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=$UID,gid=$(id -g) share ~/host
