Don't want to start a whole discussion on which is the best Linux
distribution. However, I would like to know which Linux distributions
welcome customization of applications/libraries/programs. So far, the only
distribution I've been able to find that really claims that they let you
build things your own way (with your own patches) is Linux from Scratch.
Even then, if you go off too far from their formulas, their choices of
libraries and their own patches, they're not very interested in hearing
about it. Many distributions like to tout that their libraries and
applications are as close to the upstream source as possible. I'd like to
find the opposite. Are there any distributions that actively encourage
using alternative libraries, patching applications' source code to add
desired functionality (especially if the applications are not actively
supported by their developers) and other forms of customization? Is anyone
else on this mailing list customizing/modifying the source code on their
Linux systems? I'd love to share some of the interesting alternative
libraries I've tracked down and some of the patches I've done (that don't
make it back upstream) and compare notes with others with similar
interests, but have not found a good outlet to do so.
