Quite frankly, I can't understand why someone would
insist on installing a nearly obsolete OS like RH9
when RHEL4 is working properly. Atleast consider
something like Fedora Core 4!
I'm not sure which kernel RHEL3 has, but you'd
probably need 2.6 kernel to get all your hardware
working properly. You can however note which modules
are loaded with lsmod. Check your RHEL /proc/config.gz
and compile a 2.6 kernel on RH9 with that
configuration as a reference. To do that of course,
you can use the vanilla sources from kernel.org or the
latest kernel source RPMs from FC4 or something (I'm
not sure if the repositories contain the latest kernel
for RH9). Vanilla sources would require quite a bit of
patching, while the Fedora rpms would have a fully
patched kernel.
But again, I can't see a reason why you'd want to
switch to such an old system when you have the latest
and the greatest working just fine.
Gosh, all this obsession with RH9 makes me sick! But
that's not meant to start a flame war or something,
just my personal opinion.
Oh and another thing. When referring to Red Hat or any
of its versions, say RH Linux and not just Linux. Red
Hat isn't the only Linux out there you know. And
you're a stallman fan, you'd want to say GNU/Linux ;)
