Swap = 1.5xSystem RAM
/boot = 100MB
/ ----> decide whether u need seperate partitions for /home, /usr,etc.
Remeber Ubuntu doesnt allow root log into init5 unless u hack it!
So that means u need big home partition.
I think ubuntu will consume about 3GB of HDD space.. remaining can be used
by the user for data storing..
So if u are going to make just three partition ( which means /home, /usr,
/tmp etc... comes under / -->ROOT)
then make sure you allocate sufficient space to / (ROOT)
And Ubuntu comes raw.. u cant paly mp3 or watch *.avi movies..
And so, u will need to download and install quite a lot of stuff and if this
is ur first experience with Ubuntu then you will take some time to
understand what fits best. Therefore allocate good room for experimentation.
To summarise...
You have 40GB space for Linux (wow)
Partitions:
/boot = 100MB (max 128MB--if multiple booting and grub splash screen etc)
swap = 1.5 to 2 times System RAM
/ = 10-15Gb (more than enuff)
You are left with approx 20+Gb of hdd space.
Make that Fat32 (thru Windows. Assuming tht u r dual booting or atleast
using the hard drive with Windows) Here you can store your song collection,
movies etc.. You can mount the partition on Ubuntu and the same can be
accessed by Windows. Serves both OS..
OR if u r not using windows
then leave this 20+Gb for installing another Linux flavour.. thereby u can
learn to dual boot Linux flavours.
