bisectability and revertability. Generally, we should never skip on a patch
because of a future patch. At some point the other patch may need to be
reverted, at which point you'd be moving back to a potentially broken state.
except that if that's a few months or years in the future, we may have
forgotten about it and waste time debugging a bug that had been known
already.
