It just didn't occur to me that I would get a working shell (via ssh) on a machine where the kernel hung itself up on one core. Now I know better.
I can now also confirm that the Wacom Intuos S 2 is indeed working (as in "can draw things in gimp") on a a 4.4-rc8 kernel with the patch proposed in [1] -- without my patch being applied to xf86-input-wacom that is.
