Switching to "Absolute" mode in xorg.conf does make "Screen" mode in 
GIMP work.

Does that mean that the resolution to this is going to be a long, long 
way off, and in the meantime I can't use Relative mode for interfacing 
with Linux/Gnome/Nautilus and Screen mode for interfacing with GIMP?
