Actually, the problem is that I don't think the drive controller and the
Lisa are talking on a normal basis. Only one or two of the many times I've
tried to boot have been successful in getting any sort of error message.
The rest of the times, the machine acts as if it's a Lisa without a hard
drive at all, other than the fact that it hangs for a minute or two before
trying to boot from a flopp and getting the Continue, Startup From menu.
I don't believe I have heard the brake clack, the only noise is the
drive spinning up and the motor running, but no seeking occurs AT ALL. The
light doesn't flash, and there appears to be no head activity, which leads
me to believe there is something weird going on with the Widget Controller
card(s) that it isn't even trying to talk to the drive, or to the machine,
or both. That is why I am so confused, as it is usually non-working, but a
few times it has talked to the drive and gotten various errors, so I'm not
sure if there is an intermittant part or maybe I should disassemble the
controller boards, and clean all contacts and IC sockets? It is almost
impossible for an IC to cause such an intermittant issue, and at first
glance I didn't see any electrolytic caps on the boards, so that probably
isn't the issue either.

Subject: Re: More about the Widget Problem
After the drive spins up, you hear the clack of the brake, and then the
head starts seeking around, right? It should be seeking around a lot, not
just a blip ever second.
When I got my Lisa, its Widges was non functional. When I powered it up
the drive would spin up, but it would just sit there, blipping ever
second, presumably looking for track 0. In frustration I grabbed the head
motor and twisted it a bunch. Then, low and behold, the drive started
working, booted into MacWorks, and showed me all the previous owner's
documents :P
