I was poking around the web recently and discovered a number of sites
that will, on request, archive mailling lists & make them
web-accessible. The ones I looked at are different from something
like eGroups because they don't have any facilities to run lists
themselves, just the archiving and they (claim to) only archive on
request -- not picking up whatever lists they can find and claiming
them as theirs. A couple of examples would be:
http://www.mail-archive.com/
http://www.listquest.com/
http://www.escribe.com/
At first glance, these types of services would seem like a potentially
useful tool to have a "back-up" archive of your list (though I don't
know how amenable they'd be to sending you a copy of their archive if
yours was destroyed).
Does anyone have any experience with services like this, good or bad,
that they'd like to share? Failing actual experience, how about
opinions of the idea.
I'll start off with a couple of comments from my brief look at the
above sites.
1) ListQuest seems to provide _only_ search capability -- not
browsing. Is that really useful?
2) None of the sites seem to retain much info about the original list,
nor provide pointers to allow users to subscribe.
Thanks, David
