In sheer contrast to what has been written by others is then my orchid
discusion list.
Although not as large as the 2.5K average or the 5K list, I do have a
completely different situation.
When I set up my list I only had a digest version and nobody really
complained as I was reviving a defunct list that had a digest only version.
After a while, because some did ask for it and because I had the chance I
added the non-digest version.
At present I have some 36 non-digest subscribers as opposed to 1912 digest
subscribers.
I guess that the fact that most subscribers to my list are no
computerexperts is the main reason for this situation.
I'm sure that, as was pointed out by others, if my subscribers were real
experts that more would switch to the non-digest version, but so far only a
happy few make use of it (and yes, I have advertised both versions).
Would I ever drop the digest version ? No I wouldn't, some people just
can't handle the steady flow of mails.
Sure, problems do exist with the subject lines, but other options would not
hold the same group of people together (some even suggested to switch to a
webbased forum, but not everybody on my list has a continuous connection to
the Internet or something like free local calls).
kind regards,
Kenneth.
