SPAM is not and need not be profitable to the things being advertised. It only needs to be profitable to the companies selling the email lists, the send-your-spam-for-you services etc. Its a wonderful thing: No obligation to make money, no audit or ROI metrics, no actual value generated, just the vapid unsupportable promise that, "out of N million eyeballs at least SOME must buy your product or become aware of your brand!"
