I'd like to run an unmoderated mailing list that,
for each message it processes, could be configured
to behave as in this made-up example:
1) The list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) receives a message
from [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject "I found
some keys in the elevator."
2) Next, it consults its list of subscribers, and determines
that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the email address of
subscriber Candace Hiller.
3) Then the list inserts the text of Candace's message into
an outbound message and sends it with the following
unconventional "FROM" and "SUBJECT" fields:
FROM: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
SUBJECT: [BL-Candace Hiller] I found some keys in the elevator
This setup reveals Candace as the sender, but conceals
her email address from the list's other subscribers.
(And if the message had come from Brian Lee, the subject
line would begin with "[BL-Brian Lee].")
I'd like to see this option because due to concern about
revealing their email addresses some people either (a) won't
join an email list or (b) join but then don't post.
For example, I live in a large apartment building. I'm sure
that the tenants would find a building mailing list to be
useful, but many would prefer not to divulge their email
addresses to other tenants.
(I realize that I could moderate the list and edit each
message to conceal the sender's address, but I have
no interest in moderating.)
I haven't yet located mailing list software or a mailing list
service that could be configured to behave as in the above
example, or even approximately so.
Does any of you know of such software or of such a service?
Is there any technical reason for which this feature
couldn't be created or couldn't work?
Would the market demand for this feature perhaps be so
tepid that no one would bother to develop it?
