A lot of companies sell a WLAN bridge that acts as a booster and supposedly
extends the range to 1.5 miles w/a clear line of site. I've never tried one
b/f, but it might offer the extended range you're looking for. Also, keep
in mind that weather plays a role w/the signal strength. On a cool, partly
cloudy, low humidity day, your signal will be much stronger than on a warm,
humid, sunny day. So, you'll probably find signal strength and speed
superior in cooler parts of the year. This is based on my 6 months of
experience using wireless, but your mileage may vary.

I can't seem to find anything on 2.4 with a range of over 1000 ft. I'm trying to find better.

Ken,

Look into 802.11b  or "wi-fi" for wireless networks with a fairly good range.

Subject: OT Roaming Wireless LAN

I'm trying to set up a mobile wireless network, such that a group of scientists can take a command unit (van) out into the field and set up. The scientists would take their iPaqs out from the van and gather data from various air monitoring stations and wells. They would be tied to the server in the van running CF and ArcIMS. My real problem is, and I know it's not really CF related, I need to figure out what solution is going to be best for giving me good range... If anyone's got any good suggestions I would appreciate it. Also, if this would be better as an offline discussion, feel free to email me directly instead.

Thanks,
