The number is randomly generated and then past on to an image dll. Then the user input is compared to what was past to the dll and then verification is either completed or rejected.
Do a search on google for either a com component or a dll that generates or manipulates images server-side. Some but not all also do the "Auto-Gen" alphanumeric images. I don't have a preference on just one dll but there are many to choose from. It just depends on your needs. But couldn't a spamming application scrape the readonly field?
