Java and ActiveX or ????

Here is the problem; we have a Browser based system that requires that one part of it run an  ActiveX. Therefore we are limited to the IE 5 or above browser. It took a couple of weeks to develop the Active X component, is there a way to “port” that to Java or some other cross browser solution?
