Maybe I read this different. But, it sounds like you want the text to be determined at runtime - dynamic.
Sounds like something you would do with CSS and z-index on Div tags. Tom Davis replied to a post about putting forms fields on top of an image. I think you could probably do the same but using just text. Here is Tom's post:

This is just two form fields overlayed onto a screen shot of a form.
This was done using Dreamweaver MX. This is one of its best tricks, you can simply draw the div's where you want them and it writes the html and css. The only problem I had, was that DWMX kept drawing the divs outside of the form tags. But that is easy to fix. Do you think this approaches your problem?
