Matt's implementation of Verity is sound. We were indexing and updating
content at least every 15 minutes for a global, mission critical app so we
had to do it this way. For the price of another server and upgrading to
K2, you get better performance and more flexibility.

That's very true--when Verity is indexing is really sucks up
resources. That's still true. Depending on how frequently you need
to index, you can either run it on the same server as your application
and just run it when there aren't many users on the app, or you can
run it on a different server and just move the files that comprise the
Verity collection from one server to another. Our KM tool runs on
five servers and that's what they do--index on one server and move the
files to the other servers.
In my case since we do still have an interface directly to the KM tool
and what I'm building is a new search interface that's is combining
several disparate data repositories under a single umbrella, the KM
content only gets indexed once per day and I do that right before the
start of the workday in the US so as the document librarians in India
are finishing their work day, I update my content. Right now with
about 10K documents the indexing process only takes about 70 seconds,
so while it's quick it is a bit CPU intensive.
